Helping women get through shorter days and darker evenings

If you’re woman over 40 and and feeling a bit daunted by the fact that the seasons seem to be changing as quickly as I can brew my morning cuppa, then I’m here to help you navigate these shorter days and darker evenings.

I’ve really noticed the leaves changing on the hedge in our garden, certainly over this past week. It’s a sign that Autumn is on its way, which means shorter days and darker evenings. I often start to feel anxious about these changing seasons but at the same time it’s an opportunity for us to re-evaluate what positive actions we can take.

Here are my top 5 tips on how we can maintain feeling good and moving in a way that doesn’t create more overwhelm.

Prioritize Morning Light
I love grabbing my morning cuppa and standing outside in the garden. Even if it’s just for 5 mins, within 1 hour of waking up, it has a profound affect on my mood for that day.

Stick to a Routine
How would you describe your routine? Is it consistent? Do you go to bed at the same time? Do you eat your meals at set times? What would you like your routine to look like? I always aim to drink 2 glasses of water as soon as I get up, eat 3 healthy meals, be in bed at 10pm every night and switch off my phone after 7pm. It doesn’t happen every day, but most of the time I’m consistent and this makes a difference to my energy levels and concentration too.

Movement Snacks
How can you create more movement in your day? What positions are you in throughout the day? Are they the same? What opportunities are there for you to move your body, today? As I’m sure you know, I love getting you to attach movement snacks to something you already do throughout your day. A movement snack, is literally, something simple and short e.g. as you leave the front door, how could you do this differently today? Whilst sitting at your desk, drop your pen on the floor a few times, then pick it up a different way every time.

Disconnect to re-connect
Stress and lack of self care can often be heightened at this time of year. The news from TV or doom scrolling on our phones. So why not leave your phone alone first thing in the morning for at least an hour – read a book, do something you love. During your lunch hour, take a walk – what 5 things could you notice. This time of year is especially lovely to do this. The colours are so vibrant, it can’t help but bring a smile.

Stay Socially Connected
The darker months can sometimes feel isolating. Who could you call? Who could you meet for coffee, lunch or try something new together? Who else makes you feel good? Connect with those friends and family who lift your spirits, make you laugh and who you could plan something fun together with.
