My 7 top tips
I love this time of year and I love my Autumn walks on the Malvern Hills. The days may be shorter and the evenings darker, but there’s so much more to enjoy from your Autumnal walk. Here are my top 7 tips for you to try.
Change your perspective
The big attraction for me during Autumn is the dramatic colours, especially the changing leaves. But rather than admiring them as you walk along. Make a point to look up at the canopies or get low and get down amongst the fallen leaves.
Colour attraction
As you stop to pause and get low or look up, what colours are you drawn to? Is it the vibrant yellows or reds or is it the transitioning colours or the rusty oranges?
Shape appeal
Whilst out on your Autumn walk, what shapes appeal to you? Is it the spiky oval shapes or the maple over sized leaves that appeal? Maybe you love the consistency of the texture on a beech tree leaf?
Create a pattern
Inspired on our recent walking holiday in Wales I was lucky enough to meet creative Shelley from Droitwich and Worcester | Nature Makers (nature-makers.co.uk) and during one of our walks we each collected a different type of leaf (roughly 10-12 of the same leaf). Between us we had an array of different types of leaves. When we got back to our accommodation we arranged them into a beautiful pattern, known as a mandala. A very therapeutic, yet striking momento of our walk.
Take photos
I love taking photographs at the best of times, but during Autumn the natural light offers the best photography opportunities. I love getting up close to leaves that I love the shape of, or even acorns or berries that offer a great contrast to the colours around them. If you’re in a woodland, why not capture the sunlight peaking through.
Have fun
As children we were often found kicking leaves and listening to the sounds that they make. Simply have fun with your Autumn walk. Natural movement is something I am hugely passionate about, so use your Autumn walk as an opportunity to rekindle our wonderful childhood memories. Start kicking those leaves, rustling them with your fingertips and savour that moment of listening to those beautiful sounds that nature presents us with.
Sunset or sunrise
The low level sunlight at this time of year is just magnificent and it will often give you those all important awe and wonder moments, that help us feel better. I do love a sunrise stomp up the Worcestershire Beacon on the Malvern Hills. Why not kickstart your day and savour a moment the sun pops up, knowing that you’ve already done your exercise for the day and have got that all important natural day light to boost your mood.
